A wonderful visit to
the Rural Life Living Museum
My brother Simon, my son Alex and I received such a warm welcome at the Rural Life Living Museum in Tilford, Surrey. What an amazing place to explore, with its many buildings, fascinating displays and equipment bringing the history of rural life vividly into view.
We were all in our element. So many of the exhibits brought back memories of growing up at Hiltonbury Farm — especially the Fergie, the Fordson Dexta and the old Fordson Standard, all tractors we grew up with. Seeing them again gave us plenty to reminisce about!
The milking equipment, threshing and haymaking displays also had a special connection with the farming life recorded in my mother’s diaries. These were familiar parts of our family’s everyday working life.
We enjoyed discussing ideas for sharing My Mother’s Diaries with museum visitors, including maybe a small display and a “Hear the Story” listening point.
If you enjoy farming, countryside history or discovering how people lived and worked in years gone by, it is well worth a visit.
